Do You Need a Rental Car on Oahu?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read
No, a holiday built around Waikiki and Honolulu does not need a rental car. Walking, TheBus, Biki bike share, taxis and the Waikiki Trolley cover the city, and for the rest of the island you can buy a seat instead of a car. A car pays off on one kind of day only: a loop of several far-apart stops at your own pace, such as the North Shore and the windward coast. For most visitors the sensible plan is no car for the stay, plus one rental day or one guided island day.

Where you can manage without one
Waikiki is compact enough for beach, restaurants and shopping on foot. For sights further out, the Waikiki Trolley Hop-on Hop-off All-Line Pass costs from €55.35 per person and is rated 4.4 from 961 reviews. Its listing mentions Diamond Head, Sea Life Park and Waikiki from open-air trolleys, in 1-, 4- and 7-day versions.

Diamond Head does not need your own car either, and a car does not replace the reservation: visitors who do not live in Hawaii must book entry online in advance. Hanauma Bay also controls visitor entry, so read the official booking page before you decide how to get there.
When a car earns its place
Haleʻiwa, a North Shore beach and a viewpoint on the windward coast lie far apart. By bus the waiting between them eats the day; by car you leave when you are ready and drop a stop when its parking is full. Our drive guide lays out that loop. One rental day also means you do not pay for a car parked near a Waikiki hotel. Compare the total, not the daily rate: hotel parking, fuel, taxes, extras and the cover you choose all change it, as does the trip to the desk if it is not at your hotel. The excess and deposit explained shows what the contract can add.
The same day without driving
If the car would only serve the island loop, set the rental total against two guided full days. The Oahu Ultimate Grand Circle Island Tour costs from €93.73 per person and is rated 4.1 from 1,265 reviews; its listing describes a full day with a guide and scenic viewpoints. The Oahu Island Full-Day Guided Tour by Bus with Lunch costs from €152.36, is rated 4.6 from 559 reviews and runs 9 hours; it names natural wonders, cultural sites, surfing spots and shopping. For two people that is about €187 against €305 before any rental arithmetic, and neither listing asks you to find parking.
| Tour | From | Rating | Best for |

| Full-Day Guided Bus Tour with Lunch | €152.36 | 4.6 (559) | A long guided day with lunch |
Who should choose differently
Families with child equipment may want a car even for fewer stops, but must request the child seat rather than assume one. Anyone who dislikes city traffic will probably enjoy the island more from a coach seat. A couple planning only Waikiki, central Honolulu and one excursion gains little from a week-long rental. If several consecutive days include distant beaches, price a multi-day rental and ask the hotel for its parking charge first.
The clear choice
Stay car-free in Waikiki. Rent for one day if choosing your own stops is the point; otherwise book the Grand Circle tour and let someone else find the parking.
