Diamond Head: Reservation, Hike and Transfer
Updated October 24, 2026 · 4 min read
Diamond Head is a short hike with a booking problem. Visitors who do not live in Hawaii must reserve entry online, and reservations open up to 30 days ahead. The question is whether to book it yourself or buy a transport package.
The trail
From the car park on the crater floor, the summit trail is 0.8 mile (1.3 km) each way and climbs 560 feet (171 m). It uses steep stairs and a lit 225-foot tunnel, and parts of it are uneven. The listing gives no duration for the hike, and the state parks site calls the surface uneven and steep, requiring caution and sturdy footwear.
The offers in the listings
| Offer | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond Head hike tour | €37.38 | 4.6 (30) |
| Diamond Head hike with roundtrip transportation | €57.13 | 4.3 (506) |
| Diamond Head hike starting at 7:00 AM from Waikiki | €58.89 | 4.1 (50) |
| Diamond Head crater hike and North Shore experience | €111.58 | 4.7 (205) |
The best-known offer is a self-guided hike with return transport, not a guided tour. Its listing tells you to book ahead to avoid long waits. Ask whether the park entry reservation is included, because the reservation is the part you cannot do on the day.
Who should skip it
Skip the stairs and tunnel if steep, uneven paths are hard for you; the trail up is not an easy walk. If your hotel is in Waikiki and you want to hike early, the 7:00 AM departure is one way to start before the heat. More hikes and day trips are in the adventure tours.
